What is a Full Blood Count (FBC) Test?
A full blood count (FBC), or also known as complete blood count (CBC), is a
blood test used to better understand different parts and features of your
blood and health.
A FBC test can detect a wide range of disorders, including anaemia, immune system diseases and
even blood cancers.
What does a Full Blood Count Test for in Singapore?
The full blood count test measures these components and features of your blood:
- Red blood cells, which carry oxygen.
- White blood cells, which fight infection.
- Hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells.
- Hematocrit, a measurement of how much your blood is made up of red blood cells.
- Platelets, which stop bleeding by blood clotting.
- Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), a measurement of the average size of your red blood cells.
Any abnormal increases or decreases in cell counts may indicate an underlying
medical condition that requires further evaluation.

Can I do a Full Blood Count Test as part of Regular Health Screening?
Yes, you may do the full blood count test as part of regular health screening. This may also allow you to pick up asymptomatic conditions. Regular health screening enables early detection which may in turn lead to a better outcome. The results may also be used as a baseline for future comparisons.
Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR)
Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR), is a type of blood test that measures how
quickly erthrocytes (red blood cells) settle at the bottom of a test tube. Red blood
cells settle relatively slower. Hence, a faster than normal settling rate may
indicate inflammatory activity in your body. Inflammation is part of your body’s
immune response system. Inflammation may occur as a reaction to chronic
disease, an immune disorder, or other medical conditions.
