The shingles vaccine, known as Shingrix®, is designed to protect against shingles, a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox. Shingrix® is a recombinant, adjuvanted vaccine, meaning it contains viral proteins to help the body build immunity. Since 2017, it has largely replaced the older Zostavax® vaccine, which was a live, attenuated vaccine with lower efficacy. Shingrix® provides stronger and longer-lasting protection against shingles and its complications, especially as the risk of shingles increases with age.

What Is Shingles?

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a painful rash caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus. After a person has had chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in the nervous system and can reactivate years later, causing shingles. While shingles is not life-threatening, the associated pain can be severe and may lead to complications. The risk of developing shingles increases with age and is more common in individuals over 50.

Shingles Symptoms

Symptoms of shingles can include:

  • Sensation of pain, burning, or tingling in a specific area on one side of the body
  • Itchy red rash that eventually turns into fluid-filled blisters, which scab over and heal
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Sensitivity to light

The pain associated with shingles can be intense, and in some cases, individuals may experience postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), where the pain persists long after the rash has healed. Shingles can also lead to serious complications such as skin infection and vision loss if left untreated.

Who Is the Shingles (Shingrix®) Vaccine Recommended for?

The Shingrix® vaccine is recommended for all adults aged 50 and older, regardless of whether they recall having had chickenpox, as the risk of shingles and its complications increases with age. Additionally, individuals who have previously had shingles or were vaccinated with Zostavax® are also advised to receive the Shingrix® vaccine for stronger and longer-lasting protection.

Shingles Vaccine Route of Administration

The shingles (Shingrix®) vaccine is typically administered via injection in the upper arm.

Shingles (Shingrix®) Vaccine Dose & Schedule

The recommended dosage for the shingles (Shingrix) vaccine is as follows:

How Long Does the Shingles (Shingrix®) Vaccine Last?

The Shingrix® vaccine is highly effective, conferring more than 90% protection against shingles and its painful complication, postherpetic neuralgia. Research shows that this protection can last for at least the first seven years after vaccination for those with healthy immune systems.

Shingles (Shingrix®) Vaccine Side Effects

Some people may experience minor side effects such as dizziness, pain or redness at the injection site, and headaches. These reactions are usually mild and temporary, but you should seek medical advice if they persist or worsen.

Uncommon but Severe Reactions to Look Out for After Your Vaccination

In rare cases, vaccinations may trigger severe allergic reactions, such as swelling of the face or eyes, breathing difficulties, or widespread itchy rashes. Should any of these symptoms occur, immediate medical attention is required.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How much does Shingrix cost in Singapore?

The shingles (Shingrix) vaccine in Singapore costs between $38 and $150 per dose with subsidies, and $370 NETT per dose for walk-ins at healthscreening.sg. Prices vary depending on eligibility for CHAS, Merdeka Generation (MG), or Pioneer Generation (PG) subsidies, which reduce costs for seniors and selected groups. Please contact us to confirm your eligibility or book an appointment.

Is Shingrix subsidised in Singapore?

Yes, the shingles (Shingrix) vaccine is subsidised under public healthcare schemes in Singapore from September 2025 for eligible individuals. From mid-2026, MediSave may also be used to offset remaining costs after subsidies, further reducing out-of-pocket expenses for seniors and immunocompromised adults. Please contact us for more information on your eligibility for subsidies or to make an appointment.

Is Shingrix free to seniors?

No, Shingrix is not free for seniors in Singapore. With subsidies, Pioneer Generation seniors pay $38 per dose, while Merdeka Generation seniors pay $75 per dose. Other CHAS and non-CHAS seniors may pay up to $150 per dose, and walk-ins are charged $370 NETT per dose. From mid-2026, MediSave, including Flexi-MediSave for seniors aged 60 and above, can also be used to offset remaining costs.

Why is Shingrix so expensive?

Shingrix is relatively costly because it is manufactured using advanced recombinant technology and contains an adjuvant system that enhances immune response. Its higher price also reflects clinical evidence of strong and long-lasting protection against shingles. These factors make it more expensive compared to older shingles vaccines.

Do I have to pay for Shingrix?

Yes, payment is required for the Shingrix vaccine, as it is not free in Singapore. With subsidies, the cost ranges from $38 to $150 NETT per dose depending on eligibility, while walk-ins pay $370 NETT per dose. From mid-2026, MediSave, including Flexi-MediSave for seniors aged 60 and above, may also be used to help offset remaining costs. Please contact us for more information on your subsidy eligibility.

Do I need a prescription to get the Shingrix vaccine?

Yes, a doctor’s prescription is usually required to receive the Shingrix vaccine in Singapore. This ensures the vaccine is appropriate for your health condition, especially if you have immune-related issues or chronic illnesses. At healthscreening.sg, we offer the shingles (Shingrix) vaccine with same-day appointments. Contact us to book your appointment.

Is Shingrix a lifetime shot?

No, Shingrix is not a lifetime shot. It requires two doses, given 2 to 6 months apart, for full protection. Current evidence shows immunity can last at least 7 years or longer, but booster recommendations may evolve as more data becomes available.

Do you always need 2 Shingri shots?

Yes, two doses of Shingrix® are required for optimal protection. The first dose primes the immune system, while the second strengthens long-term immunity. The doses should be spaced 2 to 6 months apart. Skipping the second dose may reduce the vaccine’s effectiveness in preventing shingles. Always follow your doctor’s instructions and guidance when receiving the vaccination.

Is one Shingrix shot enough?

No, one Shingrix shot is not enough. Two doses are needed to achieve the level of protection demonstrated in clinical studies. The first dose triggers an immune response, and the second ensures durability and strength of protection.

Is the shingles vaccine covered by MediSave?

Yes, the shingles (Shingrix®) vaccine will be partly covered by MediSave from mid-2026 under the MediSave500 and MediSave700 schemes, after subsidies are applied. These subsidies include Pioneer Generation, Merdeka Generation, and CHAS subsidies, which lower the upfront cost before MediSave or Flexi-MediSave for seniors aged 60 and above can be used to offset the remaining balance.

Is Shingrix really worth it?

Shingrix is widely regarded as effective in preventing shingles and its complications, with clinical studies showing over 90% protection in adults over 50. Its long-lasting immunity significantly lowers the risk of serious complications such as postherpetic neuralgia. If you are unsure if Shingrix is suitable for you, it is advisable to consult a doctor for personalised advice.

Should I get the shingles vaccine if I never had chickenpox?

Yes, you can still receive the shingles vaccine even if you never had chickenpox. Many people have been exposed to the varicella-zoster virus without symptoms, which may put them at risk of shingles later in life.

Does the chickenpox vaccine prevent shingles?

The chickenpox (varicella) vaccine reduces the likelihood of developing shingles later in life, but it does not fully eliminate the risk. Shingles may still occur, though less often than in those without prior vaccination. For stronger protection against shingles and its complications, the Shingrix vaccine is recommended for adults, particularly those aged 50 and above. If you are unsure, it is advisable to consult your doctor to determine which vaccinations are most suitable for you.

Is Shingrix a live vaccine?

No, Shingrix is a recombinant vaccine, meaning it does not contain live virus. Instead, it uses specific viral proteins with an adjuvant to stimulate a strong immune response. This makes it suitable for many adults, including some with weakened immune systems.

Can I get shingles after the Shingrix vaccine?

Yes, it is still possible, though uncommon, to get shingles after receiving Shingrix. The vaccine significantly lowers the risk but does not guarantee complete protection. If shingles does occur after vaccination, symptoms are usually milder and complications less likely.
