What Is the Hajj Medical Assessment?

The Hajj Medical Assessment is a mandatory health screening required by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah (MOHU) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for all prospective pilgrims.

This assessment ensures that applicants are medically fit, free from disqualifying chronic medical conditions, and physically capable of performing Hajj rituals safely. The evaluation must be completed in person by a registered medical practitioner.

At healthscreening.sg, we offer the Hajj Medical Assessment at $50 NETT, inclusive of GST, available at our Orchard and Tanjong Pagar clinic locations.

Why Is This Assessment Required?

The Hajj pilgrimage involves physically demanding rituals that take place in challenging environmental conditions. Pilgrims must be prepared to:

  • Walk long distances – Between 5km to 20km daily across various terrains
  • Endure extreme heat – Temperatures ranging from 40 to 45 degrees Celsius
  • Stand for prolonged periods – During prayers and religious rituals
  • Navigate large crowds – Millions of pilgrims perform Hajj simultaneously

Given these strenuous requirements, the medical assessment helps identify individuals who may be at risk of medical complications during the pilgrimage. The assessment is mandatory for all applicants who have received the Letter of Intent from MUIS (Islamic Religious Council of Singapore).

Disqualifying Chronic Medical Conditions

Certain medical conditions may disqualify applicants from performing Hajj due to safety concerns. These include:

  • Major organ failure requiring dialysis or continuous oxygen therapy
  • Severe neurological or psychiatric disorders that affect mobility or cognition
  • Advanced dementia particularly in elderly pilgrims
  • Advanced or high-risk pregnancy
  • Active infectious diseases such as tuberculosis
  • Cancer under active treatment
  • Complete dependence on wheelchair or mobility scooter

Important note: Common conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol do not automatically disqualify applicants if they are well-controlled through medication and lifestyle management. However, applicants must declare all medical conditions truthfully during the assessment.

Walking sticks may be permitted for light support, but full wheelchair dependence typically disqualifies applicants due to the extensive walking distances and crowd navigation required.

What Does the Assessment Involve?

The Hajj Medical Assessment consists of three main steps:

  1. In-person medical evaluation – A registered doctor will conduct a physical examination to assess your overall health status and fitness for Hajj. Virtual or online assessments are strictly prohibited.
  2. Online checklist completion – You will need to complete an online medical evaluation form at go.gov.sg/haj2026mef.
  3. Medical Health Certificate issuance – Upon successful evaluation, a registered doctor will issue your Medical Health Certificate.

Blood tests are typically not required unless the examining physician determines they are medically necessary based on your health history or current condition.

What Should I Bring for the Assessment?

To ensure a smooth assessment process, please bring the following items to your appointment:

  • Letter of Intent from MUIS and your NRIC
  • List of current medical conditions and medications you are taking
  • Recent blood test results (if available)
  • Contact information for your regular doctor (if applicable)

Having these documents ready will help the examining doctor conduct a thorough and accurate assessment of your medical fitness for Hajj.

Understanding Your Medical Health Certificate

After your assessment, you will receive one of two possible outcomes:

Medically FIT: This means you meet all MOHU health requirements for Hajj 2026. You must accept your certificate via the MyHajSG portal by 21 November 2025. Failure to accept by this deadline will result in your application being rejected.

Medically UNFIT: This means you have been advised to defer your Hajj application due to medical concerns. You must log your deferral or cancellation in the MyHajSG portal. Generally, only one assessment is required unless your health status changes significantly.

Important Deadlines and Timelines

Meeting the following deadlines is critical for your Hajj 2026 application:

Date Milestone
31 October – 21 November 2025 Complete Hajj Medical Assessment
By 21 November 2025 Accept or defer certificate via MyHajSG portal
From 1 December 2025 Letter of Offer issued by MUIS
25-30 May 2026 (estimated) Hajj rituals period

Warning: Missing the 21 November 2025 deadline will result in your application being rejected for Hajj 2026.

Additional Health Considerations

Beyond the mandatory medical assessment, pilgrims are strongly advised to:

  • Get vaccinated – The Meningitis ACWY vaccine is mandatory. Influenza and pneumococcal vaccines are also highly recommended.
  • Monitor health changes – If your health status changes significantly after receiving your medical certificate, you must undergo a reassessment.
  • Prepare physically – Start a walking routine months before Hajj to build stamina for the long daily distances.
  • Manage chronic conditions – Ensure all chronic diseases are well-controlled before departure.

We also offer Medical Treatment Booklet completion services for $49.05 to help pilgrims prepare their health records for the journey.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need to complete the Hajj Medical Assessment?

Yes, the Hajj Medical Assessment is required for all prospective pilgrims who have been issued a Letter of Intent from MUIS. This mandatory health evaluation is set by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah (MOHU), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and medical certification is essential for visa issuance.

Can I do the medical assessment online or via video consultation?

No, all applicants must undergo an in-person medical assessment by a registered medical practitioner in Singapore. Virtual assessments or video consultations are not acceptable under MOHU requirements, as the doctor needs to assess your physical health, mobility, and overall fitness for Hajj.

Will having diabetes or high blood pressure disqualify me from Hajj?

No, common chronic conditions like diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol do not automatically disqualify applicants if they are well-controlled with medication, monitored regularly, and managed with proper follow-up by a doctor.

What conditions will disqualify me from performing Hajj?

Disqualifying conditions include: major organ failure (such as requiring dialysis, oxygen therapy, or causing severe symptoms), cardiac, pulmonary, or liver failure, severe neurological or psychiatric conditions, advanced dementia (especially in elderly pilgrims), advanced or high-risk pregnancy, active infectious illnesses like tuberculosis, cancer currently under treatment, and complete dependence on wheelchairs, scooters, or constant human assistance.

Can I use a wheelchair or walking stick during Hajj?

Walking sticks may be allowed for light support. However, those who are fully dependent on wheelchairs, scooters, or need constant human assistance do not meet MOHU's health requirements, as Hajj involves walking long distances (5km to 20km daily) and moving through dense crowds.

How much does the Hajj Medical Assessment cost?

The Hajj Medical Assessment at healthscreening.sg is $50 NETT, inclusive of GST.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

Not completing the Hajj Medical Assessment by the deadline (21 November 2025) will result in your application not being considered for Hajj 2026 (1447H). While MUIS may allow exceptions in rare cases, applicants are strongly encouraged to finish the assessment within the given timeframe to prevent issues.

What if I am declared medically unfit?

Those declared medically unfit should defer their Hajj until their health condition improves. MUIS recognizes this may be disheartening, but pilgrim safety and wellbeing are paramount. You may select "I Wish to Defer" or "I Wish to Cancel" via the MyHajSG portal. While seeking a second opinion at your expense is possible, the final determination must comply with MOHU's health standards.

Does completing the assessment guarantee I will be selected for Hajj?

No, the final selection will be based on the applicant's position in the Hajj registration queue. Being medically certified does not ensure selection for Hajj 2026. Letters of Offer are expected to be distributed from 1 December 2025 onward.
