As we age, our health needs often become more varied and complex. Regular medical check-ups are an important way to support long-term health and maintain independence. For older adults, health screenings help detect medical conditions early, manage existing illnesses, and take preventive measures so you can focus on enjoying your daily life.

Whether you are monitoring chronic conditions, watching for age-related changes, or keeping up with routine care, a structured health check-up provides a clearer understanding of your overall wellbeing.

At healthscreening.sg, we offer holistic health screening packages designed for seniors, including subsidised options under the Screen for Life (SFL) programme.

Why Are Health Check-Ups Important for Seniors?

Health check-ups are important for seniors as they enable early detection of medical conditions, support the management of chronic illnesses, and help maintain overall health and wellbeing in later years.

Key benefits for older adults include:

  1. Detecting silent conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes before symptoms appear.
  2. Monitoring common age-related risks, including osteoporosis, colorectal cancer, and heart disease.
  3. Adjusting treatment plans to manage ongoing conditions.
  4. Spotting early changes in memory, thinking, hearing, or vision that may affect daily activities.

How Often Should Seniors Go for Health Check-Ups?

The ideal frequency of health check-ups for seniors depends on factors such as current health status, existing medical conditions, age-related risk factors, and family medical history.

Typical guidelines include:

  • Annual reviews for chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.
  • Cancer screenings such as colorectal, breast, or prostate tests every 1 to 2 years, depending on personal risk factors.
  • Bone, vision, and hearing assessments every few years or as recommended by your doctor.
  • Cognitive testing if you have symptoms or risk factors for memory loss or dementia.

Some individuals may need more frequent checks depending on their medical profile. It is best to consult your healthcare provider, who can advise you on the most relevant screenings and their recommended frequency.

The Health Promotion Board’s (HPB) Screen for Life (SFL) programme encourages older adults to undergo subsidised health screenings for both chronic conditions and certain cancers.

Costs vary depending on whether you hold a CHAS, Pioneer Generation (PG), or Merdeka Generation (MG) card.

How Long Does a Health Screening Take?

Most health screenings at our clinic take between 30 and 60 minutes to complete. More comprehensive packages, such as the Royal ($667) package and above, may take 2 to 3 hours, depending on the number and type of tests included.

If you are unsure how much time to set aside or need help choosing a suitable time slot, please contact our team for assistance.

What Should I Prepare Before a Health Check-Up?

Preparing in advance helps ensure your screening is smooth and efficient. Please bring:

  1. NRIC or valid identification for registration
  2. CHAS, Pioneer Generation (PG), Merdeka Generation (MG) card or Healthier SG documentation if using subsidised services
  3. A list of your current medications and supplements
  4. Any past test results or medical records, if available

Wear comfortable clothing, especially if your check-up involves physical assessments or measurements. Our staff will guide you on any additional requirements when you make your appointment.

Am I Required to Fast for My Health Screening?

For most of our health screenings, fasting is not required. However, our Ace ($76), Elite ($130), and Ultrasound Liver or Ultrasound Abdomen tests require fasting for more precise results.

Individuals with high cholesterol or on cholesterol-lowering medication are advised to fast for 8 to 12 hours before the test for more precise results. This is because fasting can provide more precise results in certain cases.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Which health check-up is recommended for senior citizens?

Under the Screen for Life (SFL) programme, seniors are advised to undergo screenings for chronic conditions and age-related risks, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and certain cancers. Additional tests may be recommended based on your personal health profile. If you are unsure, consult a doctor to determine the most suitable package for your age, medical history, and risk factors.

Is there a maximum age limit for preventive health check-ups in seniors?

There is no set maximum age for preventive health check-ups. Screenings can continue into advanced age if they remain useful for detecting conditions early or guiding ongoing care. The suitability of each test depends on your health, medical history, and personal goals. A doctor can help assess what is appropriate for your situation.

What tests should seniors have?

The Health Promotion Board’s (HPB) Screen for Life (SFL) programme recommends screenings for diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, colorectal cancer, cervical cancer, and breast cancer. Other useful tests may include bone density scans, vision and hearing checks, cognitive assessments, and cancer screenings based on gender or family history. A doctor can help identify which tests are most relevant for your needs.

Which type of doctor is best for seniors?

A general practitioner (GP) is usually the first point of contact for preventive screenings and chronic disease management. If specialised care is needed, your GP can refer you to specialists such as geriatricians, cardiologists, or endocrinologists.

What is the $5 health screening package in Singapore?

The Screen for Life (SFL) programme offers subsidised health screenings that may cost between $0 and $5, depending on your CHAS, Pioneer Generation (PG), or Merdeka Generation (MG) card status. These include checks for chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol, as well as selected cancer screenings like the Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT). At healthscreening.sg, we are a CHAS-approved and Healthier SG-enrolled GP clinic offering these subsidised screenings.

Can MediSave be used for a full body check-up?

MediSave can be used for specific approved screening tests, such as mammograms and colonoscopies under national guidelines, but generally not for comprehensive or full body check-ups. Most other health screening packages require out-of-pocket payment.

Is there an age limit for health screening in Singapore?

There is no strict age limit for health screenings. Older adults should continue regular screenings as they help monitor health, detect issues early, adjust ongoing treatment, and maintain quality of life. The decision should be based on personal health status and risk factors, with guidance from your doctor.

Is a mammogram free under Healthier SG?

For eligible women aged 50 and above, a mammogram may be subsidised under Healthier SG and the Screen for Life (SFL) programme, with costs ranging from $0 to $5 depending on CHAS, PG, or MG card status.
