What Are Symptoms of STDs?
STDs can be completely asymptomatic or present with mild symptoms until the later stages of infection. When symptoms do occur, they may include:
- Pain when urinating
- Itch or pain in the urethra or vagina
- Lumps, growths, rashes, sores, or blisters on the genitalia
- Pain, aching or swelling in the testicles
- Lumps or swollen lymph nodes at the groin
- General malaise, fever, body aches, rash, and fatigue
If you suspect you may be at risk, please do consult a doctor and undergo the relevant STD tests. Most STDs can be treated or controlled when it is detected early.
Which STDs are not curable?
Some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are caused by viruses and cannot be cured, but their symptoms can often be managed with ongoing treatment. These include:
- HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus): Although not curable, HIV can be controlled with antiretroviral therapy (ART), allowing individuals to live long, healthy lives and prevent transmission to others.
- Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV): HSV-1 and HSV-2 cause oral and genital herpes. While there is no cure, antiviral medications can reduce outbreaks and lower the risk of transmission.
- Human Papillomavirus (HPV): Most HPV infections resolve on their own, but some strains can persist and lead to genital warts or certain cancers. Vaccines are available to prevent the most harmful strains.
- Hepatitis B: This liver infection can become chronic. While a cure is not available for chronic cases, antiviral medications help manage the disease and reduce the risk of liver complications.
Regular screening and early diagnosis are key to managing these infections effectively and reducing transmission risks.

How Do I Book an STD Test Appointment in Singapore?
How to Prepare for Your STD Tests?
- There's no need to fast before your tests — you may eat and drink as usual prior to your appointment.
- If your screening includes a urine test, please refrain from urinating for 1–2 hours before your visit. This helps ensure the sample is accurate and suitable for detecting possible infections.
- When providing a urine sample, please collect the very first part of your urine stream (known as the first void). Urinate directly into the sterile container without discarding the initial flow. Avoid cleaning your genital area beforehand unless you’ve been specifically advised to do so.
If you have any questions, feel free to check with our friendly clinic staff.
